eBay and Vestiaire Collective Want an Exemption from Trump’s Tariffs
eBay and Vestiaire Collective, two of the largest online marketplaces, are lobbying the Trump administration for an exemption from the recent tariffs imposed on Chinese goods. The tariffs, which are part of the ongoing trade war between the US and China, have caused prices to increase for many consumer goods, including clothing and accessories.
Both eBay and Vestiaire Collective argue that the tariffs will hurt their businesses and their customers. eBay, which allows individuals and small businesses to sell products online, has stated that the tariffs will make it more difficult for sellers to compete with larger retailers. Vestiaire Collective, a luxury resale platform, is concerned that the tariffs will drive up prices for their customers.
The two companies have joined forces with other online marketplaces to form a coalition to voice their concerns to the Trump administration. They are calling for exemptions for certain categories of products, including clothing, shoes, and accessories.
In a statement, eBay CEO Devin Wenig said, “These tariffs will hurt American consumers and small businesses. We urge the administration to reconsider and grant exemptions for online marketplaces like eBay, which provide a vital platform for small businesses to reach customers around the world.”
Vestiaire Collective CEO Max Bittner echoed Wenig’s sentiments, saying, “The tariffs will have a significant impact on our business and our customers. We are calling on the administration to exempt luxury resale platforms like ours from these tariffs.”
It remains to be seen whether the Trump administration will grant exemptions to eBay and Vestiaire Collective. In the meantime, both companies are preparing for the potential impact of the tariffs on their businesses and their customers.
